Keith was about ten years old when he first took an interest in sandboarding. Living near the Oregon dunes made it easy for
Keith and his father to make and test out a variety of boards over the next few years.
The dunes were always available although often were too wet to ride. Still, Keith enjoyed running his boards down the dune face when
ever he could. |
|
Sledding, skim boarding, body boarding, wake boarding, snow boarding, wind surfing and sandboarding are all in his experience but Keith
says,"I like sandboarding most of all though. It is definitely the best board sport I have ever tried." Many agree with him. When the weather allows it Keith will often sandboard with friend, ( Brandon Smoldt ) every day. The dry sand of Oregon dunes is excellent for sandboarding yet Keith has found a way to board on the wet sand as well. Searching for new ways and places to sandboard is typical for Keith. He may well know the Oregon dunes, from a sandboarders point of view, better than anyone. In surfing, you have one chance at each wave. That's it, just one. In sandboarding you can have as many rides on that 'wave' as you wish. In a short time a boarder becomes a master of that dune and the ride soon feels so completely natural. |

Keith goes extreme 9/99 |
In September of '99 Keith came out to
the Sandboard Magazine / Dune Riders International demo at Oregon's Honeyman Park and rode with national champion Josh Tenge and world speed record holder Erik Johnson.
We all had a great time and made some new friends. Keith saw for himself the level that pro sandboarders were carvin' dune and in a short time was
racing down the same chutes and jumping with more air than ever before. He also took us to a short run that launched right out onto the lake at
Honeyman, ( first time for many of us ). CLICK HERE if you would like to see the sequence photo of Keith sandboarding out onto the water. Keith was 14 at the time of this feature so there's plenty of time ahead in his life for sandboarding. Keith likes listening to Regae music, for those of you who were wondering and enjoys other activities as well. |
