Four years ago Julie was introduced to sand boarding by her father,
sandboard pioneer, Pete Pilcic. Today, Julie is not only "Sand Master Jam"
woman's champion but is also rated #1 in the world by DuneRiders International.
Loving the challenge of trying something cutting edge new, she excells
at sandboarding and snowboarding and enjoys them thoroughly. |
"Dumont is my favorite dune so far." Julie admits, "it
has the best setup, and there are no obstacles at the bottom of the hill.
No getting bush whacked by shrubs or pelted by pebbles. Just a clean, clear,
and extremely large dune with plenty of run out.
We asked Julie why she liked sandboarding so much, "I like the fact
that I can ride year round, sandboard in the summer and snow board
in the winter, THAT'S GREAT!"
Sandboarding isn't Julie's only pastime, as a current student at Antelope
Valley College, she is majoring in Computer Science, but also enjoys a
passion for horseback riding, dancing, shooting, snowboarding, and drawing.
"Sandboarding will always be my number one sport. It's easy to see it
becoming as popular as snowboarding." To promote this sport world
wide Julie is looking for additional sponsors as she plans to travel internationally,
bringing her skill to such countrys as Australia where she has always
wanted to visit. |

Julie's advice to those considering sandboarding is to try it three
times before you decide if you like it. "The first time is tough. The
second time it gets easier. By the third time, your hooked."
For those of you who are already hooked Julie advises consistently; "keep
your weight on your front leg, knees bent, hips centered. And most of all
CLOSE YOUR EYES AND MOUTH WHEN YOU FALL"!
Speaking of consistency, notice the three photos at right of Julie
at different events in her "trade mark" stance. When you see a female boarder
flying down the dune in this stance you can bet it's Julie. |
|
Anyone interested in catching this sandboarder had better
ride a fast board as Julie continues to break her own records. And what
does the future hold for Julie? When she's the world champion
she'll be happy. But, if not she'll still be content just carving dunes.
Lots of luck Julie and to all you other riders out there, keep riding those
dunes!
